Hot off the Presses:

Backcountry Skiing hits Olympia

Last night The Alpine Experience was proud to host, Margaret Wheeler and Scott Schell for the debut of their new book. These two are pros. Professional ski an mountain guides, photographers, world famous authors and downright fun folks.

They gave an informative and fun presentation introducing their new text Backcountry Skiing: Skills for Ski Touring and Ski Mountaineering.

Thanks to The Mountaineers for publishing this book, helping us put on the presentation, and for hooking us up with free books before they are even released!!!

This book is bound to be the new “bible” for skiing in the backcountry. It is unlike anything else out there so far. It is a great book for the first timers and for those of us that want a reference for more advanced topics. Some of the real highlights in it cover techniques such as track setting, kick-turns while skinning, transitions, and anchors for ski mountaineering. This baby packs a ton of applicable info into a readable text. I’ve had a chance to read a good portion of it and have already picked up a few tips. There has also been a few “a-ha” moments and a number of “duh, why didn’t I think of that before?” epiphanies. It is great to have something productive to flip through while I wait for more snow to fly.  I imagine that a bunch of our wonderful guests last night will have he same sort of experiences as they peruse their new, free, autographed copies.

If you weren’t at the show keep your eyes peeled for your chance to grab a copy at The Alpine Experience as soon as they come in later this month.

Also, if you want a little more “skis on” instruction this season check out Pro guide Service @ proguiding.com where you can sign up for a guided tour or avalanche class and have the world famous authors teach you personally!

And thanks to Plenty! For such a great venue.
